Type the supplier’s name in From, set Date within to 1 month of a date 3 months back, tick Has attachment and click Search.

When you click Search, Gmail writes the matching operators in the search bar. Gmail then shows only the emails that match all of them.

from:hotel subject:reservation after:2026/01/01
finds your hotel bookings since January 1, 2026

Quotation marks search an exact phrase:
"order confirmation"

OR
in capitals finds one term or the other:
from:amazon OR from:ebay

A minus sign excludes a word:
from:airline -newsletter

Write
from:john
, with no space after the colon. You can combine it with other operators:
is:read from:school after:2026/09/01
. The opposite,
is:unread
, isolates the emails you have not opened, and the Is unread chip does the same on a computer.

A read email stays in your inbox until you archive or delete it. If it has gone, the next section lists the causes.

Can’t find an email in Gmail? Check these causes

Start with one search: type
in:anywhere
followed by a word from the email. By default, Gmail search skips Spam and Trash, and
in:anywhere
includes them.

Is the email in another inbox tab or in Spam?

Emails from shops, social networks and online services often land in the Promotions, Social or Updates tab. Open each tab, or search with
category:promotions
,
category:social
or
category:updates
.

To check Spam:

On a computer, click More in the left menu, then Spam. In the app, tap the menu icon at the top left, then Spam

Open the email and click Report not spam

Gmail deletes messages in Spam after 30 days.

Was the email deleted or archived?

Deleted emails go to Trash, where they stay 30 days. To bring one back:

Open Trash, under More in the left menu on a computer (see where to find the Gmail trash)

Open the email

Click the Move to icon and choose Inbox

An archived email has left the inbox but stays in All Mail, and the search bar still finds it. See how to find archived emails in Gmail.

On a phone, swiping an email to the side archives or deletes it. It is a frequent cause of missing emails, and you can change what a swipe does in the app settings.

Is a filter sending emails away from your inbox?

A filter can archive incoming emails (Skip the Inbox), delete them, mark them as read or give them a label. To check your filters:

Click the gear icon at the top right, then See all settings

Open the Filters and Blocked Addresses tab

Edit or delete the filter that catches the email

The same tab lists blocked addresses. Emails from a blocked sender go straight to Spam.

Are you signed in to the right account, and is the app synced?

If you use several Google accounts, look at the profile picture at the top right: the email may be in another account. Click or tap the picture to switch. For help signing in, see how to sign in to Gmail.

In the app, pull down the inbox to refresh it, check your connection and update the app. On Android, open the menu, then Settings, choose your account and check that Sync Gmail is ticked.

To test quickly, search for the email on a computer. If it shows up there, the issue comes from the app.

If the email still does not show up, go through the 8 fixes for when you can’t see your emails in Gmail, including storage, forwarding and browser issues.

Is a missing Gmail email lost for good?

Most of the time, no.
