To find an email in Gmail, type the sender’s name, a word from the subject or a distinctive term in the search bar at the top of Gmail, then press Enter. On a computer, the sliders icon at the right end of the bar opens the search options. In the Gmail app on Android or iPhone, filters appear under the results.
If the email still does not show up, it is usually in another inbox tab, in Spam, in Trash or in All Mail. The last part of this page covers each case.
In summary
- Type one distinctive word in the search bar at the top of Gmail, on a computer or in the app
- Narrow down with the search options (sliders icon) on a computer, or with the filters under the results on a phone
- Add operators such as
from:,subject:,has:attachmentorafter:to find the email on the first try - Email missing? Check the Promotions, Social and Updates tabs, then Spam, Trash, All Mail, your filters and the account you are signed in to
- Spam and Trash are emptied after 30 days, and an email deleted after that is usually gone
How do I find an email in Gmail?
The search bar looks through the sender, the recipients, the subject and the text of your messages. One word works better than a sentence: the sender’s name, a booking number, the name of a shop.
As you type, Gmail suggests matching messages and contacts. Click a suggestion to open it directly.
How do I search for an email on a computer?
- Open Gmail in your browser
- Click the Search mail bar at the top of the page
- Type a name or a word from the email
- Press Enter
Under the bar, filter chips such as From, Any time, Has attachment and Is unread narrow down the results with a single click.
How do I find an email in the Gmail app on Android or iPhone?
- Open the Gmail app
- Tap Search in mail at the top of the screen
- Type a name or a word
- Tap the search key on your keyboard
Filters such as From, Date and Attachment appear under the results. The search operators described below also work in the app.
How do I use the search options to narrow down results?
On a computer, click the sliders icon (Show search options) at the right end of the search bar. A form opens with these fields:
- From and To
- Subject
- Has the words and Doesn’t have
- Size
- Date within
- Search, set to All Mail by default
- Has attachment
Say you need an invoice a supplier sent about 3 months ago. Type the supplier’s name in From, set Date within to 1 month of a date 3 months back, tick Has attachment and click Search.
When you click Search, Gmail writes the matching operators in the search bar. It is a quick way to learn them.
Which Gmail search operators help you find an email faster?
Operators are short commands you type in the search bar, on a computer or in the app.
| Operator | What it finds | Example |
|---|---|---|
from: | Emails from a sender | from:booking.com |
to: | Emails sent to someone | to:jane@example.com |
subject: | A word in the subject | subject:invoice |
has:attachment | Emails with a file | from:bank has:attachment |
filename: | A file type or file name | filename:pdf |
after: and before: | A date range (year/month/day) | after:2026/03/01 before:2026/04/01 |
older_than: | Emails older than a period (d, m, y) | older_than:1y |
is:unread | Emails you have not opened | is:unread from:amazon |
in:anywhere | All emails, Spam and Trash included | in:anywhere subject:receipt |
larger: | Emails above a size | larger:10M |
For archived emails and the All Mail folder, see how to find archived emails in Gmail.
Once a search shows the emails you want, you can select them all and remove them at once: see how to delete all your Gmail emails at once.
To stop a sender’s emails from reaching your inbox in the future, block the sender or unsubscribe.
How do I combine operators for a precise search?
Type several operators one after the other, separated by spaces. Gmail then shows only the emails that match all of them.
from:hotel subject:reservation after:2026/01/01finds your hotel bookings since January 1, 2026- Quotation marks search an exact phrase:
"order confirmation" ORin capitals finds one term or the other:from:amazon OR from:ebay- A minus sign excludes a word:
from:airline -newsletter
Write from:john, with no space after the colon. With a space, Gmail no longer reads it as an operator.
How do I find an attachment in Gmail?
has:attachmentlists every email that carries a filefrom:bank has:attachmentlimits it to one senderfilename:pdf, filename:xlsxorfilename:jpgtarget a file type, andfilename:contract.pdfa precise filehas:drive, has:documentandhas:spreadsheetfind Google Drive files shared in an emaillarger:5Mfinds emails over 5 MB
In the app, tap the Attachment filter under the results.
How do I find read emails in Gmail?
Type is:read in the search bar. You can combine it with other operators: is:read from:school after:2026/09/01. The opposite, is:unread, isolates the emails you have not opened, and the Is unread chip does the same on a computer.
A read email stays in your inbox until you archive or delete it. If it has gone, the next section lists the causes.
Can’t find an email in Gmail? Check these causes
Start with one search: type in:anywhere followed by a word from the email. By default, Gmail search skips Spam and Trash, and in:anywhere includes them.
Is the email in another inbox tab or in Spam?
Emails from shops, social networks and online services often land in the Promotions, Social or Updates tab. Open each tab, or search with category:promotions, category:social or category:updates.
To check Spam:
- On a computer, click More in the left menu, then Spam. In the app, tap the menu icon at the top left, then Spam
- Open the email and click Report not spam
Gmail deletes messages in Spam after 30 days.
Was the email deleted or archived?
Deleted emails go to Trash, where they stay 30 days. To bring one back:
- Open Trash, under More in the left menu on a computer (see where to find the Gmail trash)
- Open the email
- Click the Move to icon and choose Inbox
An archived email has left the inbox but stays in All Mail, and the search bar still finds it. See how to find archived emails in Gmail.
On a phone, swiping an email to the side archives or deletes it. It is a frequent cause of missing emails, and you can change what a swipe does in the app settings.
Is a filter sending emails away from your inbox?
A filter can archive incoming emails (Skip the Inbox), delete them, mark them as read or give them a label. To check your filters:
- Click the gear icon at the top right, then See all settings
- Open the Filters and Blocked Addresses tab
- Edit or delete the filter that catches the email
The same tab lists blocked addresses. Emails from a blocked sender go straight to Spam.
Are you signed in to the right account, and is the app synced?
If you use several Google accounts, look at the profile picture at the top right: the email may be in another account. Click or tap the picture to switch. For help signing in, see how to sign in to Gmail.
In the app, pull down the inbox to refresh it, check your connection and update the app. On Android, open the menu, then Settings, choose your account and check that Sync Gmail is ticked.
To test quickly, search for the email on a computer. If it shows up there, the issue comes from the app.
If the email still does not show up, go through the 8 fixes for when you can’t see your emails in Gmail, including storage, forwarding and browser issues.
Is a missing Gmail email lost for good?
Most of the time, no. The email is in a tab, in Spam, in Trash or in All Mail.
- In Spam or Trash for less than 30 days, you can move it back to your inbox
- Deleted forever, or removed when Trash was emptied, it usually cannot be recovered on a personal Gmail account
- Never received, it may have gone to a wrong address, so ask the sender to check for an error message and send it again
For an email you sent, search with in:sent or in:anywhere to:name@example.com.
