How to Create a Signature on Gmail and Insert it in my emails


How to create a signature on Gmail? On mobile and on computer, with an optional image.

If you have not yet created a signature in the settings, you should add it. Then you can define whether it should be included in the messages you send, or in the emails you reply to (or forward).

How do I create a new signature in Gmail?

Create a Gmail signature on a computer

  1. open Gmail and sign in with the right account (if you have more than one)
  2. at the top right, click on Settings ⚙️ then See all settings
  3. stay in the General tab, scroll down until you find the Signature section. Under “No signatures”, click on Create new
  4. choose a name for your signature (to differentiate them, if you create several) and click on Create
  5. the signature is displayed in the list: on the right, you have a space to write your signature. Put all the text you want, with line breaks, formatting (bold, color, size…)
  6. don’t forget to go to the bottom of the page and click on Save Changes

Now that your signature is created, you need to configure Gmail to add it in your messages, as explained below.

Create a Gmail signature on Android phone

  1. Open the Gmail application
  2. In the top left corner, press Menu
  3. Scroll down, then tap Settings
  4. Select the Google account you want to add a signature for.
  5. Tap Mobile Signature
  6. Write your signature text (it’s only plain text with no formatting… go to a computer for advanced options…)
  7. Validate by pressing OK

Create a Gmail signature on iPhone or iPad

  1. On your iPhone or iPad, open the Gmail application
  2. Press on the menu
  3. Scroll down, then press Settings
  4. Tap your account
  5. Tap Signature settings
  6. Turn on the Mobile Signature setting
  7. Write your signature text (it’s only plain text with no formatting… go to a computer for advanced options…)
  8. Validate by pressing Return ⬅️

How to insert a signature in an email on Gmail?

You can configure Gmail so that your signature is systematically added in your mails, without having to add it manually. Just go to the settings, General tab, Signature section, select your signature (if you have more than one) and select it in the Default signature values section. Don’t forget to go to the bottom of the page and click on Save changes.

You can also decide that the signature should not be automatically included. In this case, when writing your email, if you want to add your signature, click on the pen icon 🖊 and then on the name of the signature you want to add.

How do I change my signature in Gmail?

To change your Gmail signature (on computer):

  1. at the top right, click on Settings ⚙️ then See all settings
  2. stay in the General tab, scroll down until you find the Signature section.
  3. click on the signature to modify (if you have several) and modify all the text (or images) of your signature in the space on the right
  4. validate at the bottom of the page by clicking on Save changes

How to add an image to a Gmail signature?

To add an image to your Gmail signature (on a computer):

  1. at the top right, click on Settings ⚙️ then See all settings
  2. stay in the General tab, scroll down until you find the Signature section.
  3. click on the signature you want to change (if you have several)
  4. at the desired location, click on the “Insert an image” icon. You can add an image with its URL (if it is public), or from your Google Drive, or by clicking on “Import” to choose an image available on your computer
  5. validate at the bottom of the page by clicking on Save changes

How to remove the 2 dashes displayed before the Gmail signature ?

To prevent Gmail from displaying 2 dashes before your signature -- follow these steps (on your computer):

  1. at the top right, click Settings ⚙️ then See all settings
  2. stay in the General tab, scroll down until you find the Signature section.
  3. check the box “Insert the signature before the text of the previous messages in the replies and delete the line “- -” before it.”
  4. validate by going to the bottom of the page and clicking on Save Changes

Can I use several signatures in Gmail?

Yes, on your computer it is possible to have several signatures available in your Gmail account, and when you write an email you can choose which one to insert in the message.

To do this, simply repeat the process to add a new signature. Then, when writing your mail, click on the pen icon 🖊 and then on the name of the signature to add.

How do I delete a signature in Gmail?

To remove a signature from your Gmail account (on computer):

  1. at the top right, click on Settings ⚙️ then See all settings
  2. stay in the General tab, scroll down until you find the Signature section.
  3. locate the signature to delete (if you have several) and click on the trash can icon 🗑 to delete it
  4. validate at the bottom of the page by clicking on Save changes
